What Is Driver CPC?

If you want to become a professional HGV driver, you will probably come across the term Driver CPC.

Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence. It is a qualification required for many people who drive HGVs professionally and forms part of the wider process of becoming qualified for commercial lorry driving.

It is separate from your HGV driving licence, which can make the process confusing for beginners.

This guide explains what Driver CPC is, who may need it and how it fits into HGV training.

What Does Driver CPC Mean?

Driver CPC is designed around the additional knowledge and competence expected from professional lorry drivers.

Your HGV licence determines which vehicles you can legally drive.

Driver CPC relates to driving those vehicles professionally where the CPC rules apply.

For example, someone may hold a Category C or Category C+E licence, but additional Driver CPC requirements may still apply if HGV driving is the main part of their job.

If you’re still learning about the licence process, see our HGV Licence Requirements guide.

Do HGV Drivers Need Driver CPC?

If HGV driving will be the main part of your job, you will generally need Driver CPC.

This applies to many drivers entering haulage, logistics and commercial transport.

There are exemptions in certain circumstances, so it is important to check the rules for the type of driving you intend to do rather than assuming every HGV licence holder needs the same qualification.

For most new professional drivers, however, Driver CPC should be considered as part of the overall training process.

Is Driver CPC the Same as an HGV Licence?

No.

An HGV licence gives you entitlement to drive a particular category of vehicle.

For example:

  • Category C is used for rigid lorries
  • Category C+E covers articulated lorries and qualifying heavier trailer combinations
  • Driver CPC relates to professional driving requirements where the rules apply

Passing your HGV driving test therefore does not automatically mean every professional qualification requirement has been completed.

What Is Initial Driver CPC?

Initial Driver CPC is relevant to many new drivers entering professional HGV work.

Showtime HGV Training provides Initial Driver CPC only.

The qualification includes theory and practical elements and should be viewed as part of your wider HGV training journey.

Showtime does not provide periodic Driver CPC training or CPC renewal.

If you are unsure whether Initial Driver CPC applies to you, contact our training team before booking.

How Does Driver CPC Fit Into HGV Training?

For a new learner, the qualification process can include:

  • Meeting the relevant medical requirements
  • Obtaining provisional HGV entitlement
  • Completing the required theory tests
  • Completing practical HGV training
  • Passing the relevant driving tests
  • Completing Initial Driver CPC where required

Your exact route depends on the licence you already hold and the type of vehicle you want to drive.

Our HGV Licence Requirements page explains the starting process in more detail.

Does Driver CPC Include Theory and Practical Tests?

Initial Driver CPC includes both theory and practical elements.

Professional drivers need to understand more than vehicle control. They also need knowledge of road safety, hazards and the responsibilities involved in operating larger vehicles.

If you’re preparing for the theory stage, our HGV Theory Test Help resource explains how to approach your revision.

Showtime is also approved for CPC Module 4 testing.

Do You Need Driver CPC for Cat C or C+E?

If you intend to drive professionally and Driver CPC rules apply to your work, you will generally need the relevant CPC qualification whichever HGV licence route you choose.

Showtime provides:

Cat C currently includes three practical driving sessions.

Car to Artic and rigid-to-artic C+E both use a three reversing session and three driving session structure.

What Is the Difference Between Initial and Periodic Driver CPC?

Initial Driver CPC is associated with becoming professionally qualified where the initial qualification is required.

Periodic Driver CPC relates to ongoing CPC requirements for existing professional drivers.

Showtime provides Initial Driver CPC only and does not offer periodic CPC training.
